The single most important thing you should do is get connected! If you are not on regular email lists from promoters (both large and small), you are going to be out of the loop. If you are looking at passive programs, volume is essential! Watching the big promoters will help you gauge a program’s popularity. Make no mistake, you can have an honest admin but still get into a major flop if there is no volume. With this in mind, don’t join everything that hits your email box. Learn to distinguish who is in it for the referral fees and those that have better instincts. For me, it is about predicting future growth potential outside the small walls of popular forums and analyzing the administration’s experience. I am a firm believer in diversification of funds, but more importantly, spotting the good ones.
